Bicycle is an ecological means of transportation, sport and recreation. Variety comes with use and needs, thus there is a wide range of models, including mountain bike, city bike, fixed gear, and many, many others.
In Polish language, bicycle was firstly known by the name of “welocyped” (velocipede) or “bicykl” (penny farthing cycle). Such etymology might be observed in majority of European languages (compare: English bicycle or Italian bicicletta etc.). Contemporary Polish name of these monocycles, “rower”, derives from British vehicle brand – now mostly associated with cars, but related to bicycle production in the past as well. Thus Polish word for bicycle links to the English notion of wanderer, vargant.
Bicycles and their use
Bicycles were introduced in 19th scale of over one billion, which means that there is twice as many bikes as cars. Used for centuries as a means of transport (still basic in many places in the world nowadays), bicycle was soon adopted and adjusted for sports and entertainment.
